Chapter Five

Violet sat with Ava in her lap and Chase next to her. They were in the house she remembered visiting as a child when she and Amber were friends. Right now it felt cold and still, like a museum. All the pretty little baubles inside that spoke of wealth, but yet no happiness, were within the walls of the house. She never wanted to be out of a house more than she did now. Ava, a baby that always laughed, played, and squealed, sat looking around silently. Even she seemed to sense the coldness of the house. They were waiting in the family room where a white baby grand piano stood and Persian rugs graced the floors. Her family was wealthy, but her parents’ home didn’t boast their money. Victor wouldn’t be seen on his death bed, he wasn’t that kind of man, so they were asked to wait while he came downstairs. It had already been twenty minutes.

“This place creeps me out,” Chase muttered.

“I think it creeps everyone out,” Violet said.

The door to the family room opened before they could say anything else and Norma wheeled in her husband. He was wearing a breathing tube and was a pale, gaunt shadow of the man she remembered. His dark skin held the pallor of illness easily recognized as cancer. The way his body had withered away to nothingness startled Violet. She recalled him being such a big strong man only two years before at a gala opening. Norma’s hair held grayer tones, and she wore it in the same severe bun at her nape that Violet remembered.

“Violet? Why are you here?” Victor wheezed the question out.

“She’s with Chase now, dear,” Norma said, and Violet could hear the disapproval in the older woman’s voice. “Apparently even now she has to have what our Amber had.”

Violet lifted her chin. “I never coveted Amber’s things, they were just things. All she wanted was for you to understand her problems.”

“She didn’t have problems, she was just over emotional.”

“And with that, we’re leaving.” Chase stood up. “We lasted over twenty minutes in this place because you weren’t in the room. Thirty seconds of speaking and you start throwing verbal daggers.”

Norma held up her hand. “I’m sorry, it was just a surprise she showed up with you.”

“Disrespect Violet or myself again and we’re gone.” Chase’s voice was cold and Violet shivered.

“Amber was troubled, we know this and hid from the truth,” Victor’s voice rasped out. “We were wrong in very many things, and we were hurt. Even when Norma called you the first time to ask for me to see the baby, I lashed out in anger. It’s always been easier to be angry than face the truth.”

“I’ve been angry for what you two did,” Chase said gutturally. “How could you put her in foster care, your own granddaughter?”

Tears ran down Victor’s face. “She looked so much like Amber, so much, each time we had to change her diaper or she cried to be held... It was like reliving a birth and then a death.
